Close If you’ve ever been a part of a conversation about infringement, you may have heard that an AR can’t be owned in New York. It is possible to legally own an AR-15 in New York. You just need to know how. RELATED STORY The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the New York Prohibitive Gun Law is Unconstitutional. First, we need to clarify whether we are referring to New York State or New York City. Both have their own laws. This information is accurate for each of the five boroughs. An AR-15 can only be owned by a civilian in any configuration. You can own an AR-15 in the rest of the country, but you will need to make certain configuration decisions before you do so. This story begins in 2013, when Andrew Cuomo, then-governor, and his cronies passed New York State SAFE Act. It’s a cute name, right? It sounds a lot like “Final Resting Place” and “Rectal Exploration.” However, this piece of legislation was passed in a hurry and did nothing to make the state more secure. It banned a class that would be known as “Assault Weapons” and created a new category of firearms. Being Classified A rifle must be semi-automatic. It must also accept a detachable magazine. You got it. This list was not created because of people getting bayoneted in the streets or a rash drive-bys involving rifles grenades. It was clearly compiled to include as many rifles possible. Imagine if you wanted cars to be banned but there was something legal in your way. Instead, you ban all vehicles with more than three wheels. This is under the auspices of “anything with more than four wheels is dangerous.” Another way to understand these bans are the coronavirus mandates that were passed in 2020. Last year was the year when the rest of the world saw the U.S. government through a gun owner’s eyes. It’s dangerous to stand in a restaurant and you will likely get COVID-19. It’s okay to sit down in one, as long as you eat …. and not chips or wings. Work Around Hand goes under receiver? Weapon of war. Hand behind the receiver This is a hunting rifle. These laws are absurd. It is obvious that the laws were passed in the belief that New Yorkers are too ignorant to see the larger picture. With a little creativity (and pretty much the same day), New Yorkers managed to navigate around these laws. Gun owners, it is true, know guns better than those who collect bribes to legislate against. All three of these items must be true in order to make a rifle an assault rifle banned, right? We’ll do it your style, pal. It is no longer considered an “Assault Weapon” if the magazine is attached to the AR-15. Many people do this to avoid the law. There are many clever ways to do this, but my favorite is the CA Comp Mag. The CA Comp Mag is attached to the receiver from the top. It then gives the user a side loading system that speeds up loading. A New Yorker can have all the everyday features they want, such as a collapsible Stock, pistol grip, threaded bar, and any other accessories that they wish to attach to the end of the magazine (sans suppressor). Get a Grip If you want an AR that can be reloaded quickly for competition, Perhaps you need the magazine to be published because you plan to use caliber conversions. You can also have it, but it must not contain any of the above features. While most of these are easy to use by grinding or pinting, replacing the pistol grip will present some difficulties. There are many designs out there, but most people who have never used the Thordsen stock will be familiar with it. This grip is no longer considered a pistol grip because it has an elongated gooseneck that extends behind the triggerguard, rather than protruding beneath it. It is a good grip because it feels like a traditional rifle. However, some shooters find it uncomfortable as it rubs against your hand and places your finger far from the trigger. The SB Spur is the next most popular grip. The SB Spur, which embraces the word “protrude”, sits flush with triggerguard, giving you only two fingers of purchase. This allows you to keep the AR platform in your natural hand position. The con is that you have at most two fingers floating around in space, which reduces your control. The “Patrick Henry” triggerguard was developed a few years later. This gave the Spur user a place for their middle finger. It allowed for a complete shift in the gun’s feel and control, which is comparable to a standard pistol grip. For the more dexterous There is also the BoAR grip. The BoAR grip’s bi-axial offset design can be compared to a videogame controller. It allows you to grip your AR with a full grip, even though it is slightly off to the side. These are specific to dexterity, but I found that using the weaker side was just as comfortable as using a Spur with a Patrick Henry. These have a standard grip. However, you can adjust the angle of your trigger finger to make them more comfortable. Parting shots Although I would prefer that New York return to a state where you can buy an AR-15 from the rack legally, the eight years of force displayed by this local administration have been remarkable. Although they won’t release the numbers, New Yorkers have significantly more AR-15s than before the SAFE Act. This is effectively the exact opposite of what was intended by the state. The best part is that many inventors became millionaires and established industry jobs based upon the half-assed infringement that was literally voted into law overnight. Even though they may not be as appealing as Andrew Cuomo’s and operate with the grace of Fredo, a New York legal AR-15 still functions as intended. This is more than we can say for those who want to ban them. This article was originally published by the Personal Defense World Gun Buyer’s Guide, February/March 2022 issue.
