Tips from Whidden on Choosing the Optimal Neck Bushing size

July 1, 2022Whidden gunworks produces great sizing dies and seating dies. The Whidden full length sizing die with neck Bushing is very popular. It allows you to “tune” the neck tension using different bushings with smaller or larger inside diameters. John Whidden explains in this video how to choose the right size bushing for your neck-sizing or full-length-sizing bushing cutting dies. John recommends that you start with the caliper-measured outer diameter of a loaded cartridge (with any bullet of your choice) and then SUBTRACT three thousandths. If your loaded round mics are at.333, you’d want to start with a 0.330 neck Bushing. John points out that you might want to experiment with bushings. You can go down a thousandth or up a thousandth. You may also want to experiment with bushing sizes, going down a thousandth and up a thousandth.
You might also try “flipping” your neck Bushings to alternate which side touches the neck. The size is usually marked on one side of the bushing, and the other is left unmarked. You can also try “numberside up” and “numberside down” to see if you have a smoother entry. This may increase concentricity. Some people believe they can achieve slightly higher or lower neck tension depending on the orientation of the bushing. This subtle effect is not difficult to detect, but it’s worth trying. You can also mark the “upside” of the bushing with nail polish to ensure that the bushing is always oriented correctly. NOTE: Some bushings have a slight taper, as we have confirmed. Bushings can also be slightly distorted when the size and brand name are stamped. There is a reason to test both orientations.
