Tips To Perfect Your Home Defense Strategy

Want to know how to protect your castle? Three experts share their tips on how to best defend your home. I feel more at ease and relaxed after traveling abroad. This level of comfort and relaxation is enhanced when I return home, back to my home. A man should feel safe in his country and at home. This is not only because you can be with friends and wear your Batman pajamas. You should feel safe at home. Some people think grown men shouldn’t wear pajamas or be ridiculed. From a tactical standpoint, there are many things you can do that will increase your home’s security. I reached out to three people who I consider to be experts in personal protection and self defense and asked them: “What, other than firearms, can you do to increase safety at your home?” “Dave Hartman (Gunsite Academy) Currently, Dave Hartman is the Gunsite Academy’s training director. This school is the oldest and most prestigious civilian firearms training school. Hartman has a vast experience in personal protection. Hartman is a solid man who is perhaps more knowledgeable about self-defense topics than anyone I know. Hartman is a solid fellow who is probably more knowledgeable about self-defense topics than anyone I know. Hartman was also a friend that I hunted with in Africa. Hartman also suggested that you ensure your phones are charged at all time. Hard lines can be cut. If you need to call 911, Hartman suggests that you give a brief description of what is happening and keep the line open. 911 calls can be recorded and used as evidence later. He suggested that you speak clearly and concisely with the dispatcher and perpetrators “… when speaking to them. “Hartman also insisted that you know the difference between concealment and cover. He says that there are very few things that can be considered cover in an apartment or a house. This is crucial when choosing what to hide behind. Most handgun bullets can be stopped by brick walls, full refrigerators or freezers, gun safes, and block or brick walls. Hartman also suggested common sense suggestions like checking doors and windows before you go to bed at night and making sure your alarm is set. Hartman also stressed the importance of surveillance cameras and external lighting. “Fake cameras could be used as a deterrent.” Dogs are an early warning system, just like alarms. He stated, “When I go to sleep at night, my bedroom is locked with my dogs in it.” Hartman suggested that you want your attacker/intruder to come to yourself and not “…go looking for a gunfight. Gather the family and shelter in one place if you can. He also said that if you are forced to take the offensive by circumstances beyond your control, do so quickly and decisively. Hartman also strongly recommended that you practice your skills at arms and find training. You may need to shoot to stop an attacker. Hartman felt that it was important to take an emergency medicine course to learn the basics of treating a gunshot wound or stab wound. Wilson CombatWilson Combat is the most successful custom firearms manufacturer worldwide. Bill Wilson, a highly experienced trigger-puller, founded the company. Wilson lives on a safe and secure ranch in Texas. It’s not a place I would want to try to infiltrate. Wilson is a founding member and founder of IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association). Wilson’s home-defense preparation advice was one of my favorite. Wilson suggested that you keep a good set electronic ear protection along with your home-defense weapon/weapon. They will protect your hearing even if your weapon has a lot muzzle blast. However, if you turn the volume up they will increase your ability to hear the threat and your family members. Wilson stated that you must not only hear your threat but also see it. He suggested that you use a quality flashlight and a weapon light to identify and locate threats. As a police officer, I learned one thing: bad guys hate light. A bright light can make it difficult for bad guys to change their minds. Wilson also stated that Wilson would “locate and put to memory any areas of your property that are good defensive positions that will prevent an incoming bullet.” Survival is the goal. Keeping bullets out of your body makes it easier to survive. You can also set up tools and weapons in places you intend to shelter. Gunsite Academy is my favorite place for self-defense training using a firearm. However, there are great instructors who can provide excellent training in other locations. Dave “Boon”, a Benghazi survivor is one of the instructors I can recommend without hesitation. Benton trained some SWAT officers and patrol officers in my area. His ability to communicate tactical, tactical, and lifesaving information in a clear and concise manner is unmatched. Boon also echoed the advice of Wilson and Hartman regarding keeping your phone charged and close to you. He also stressed the importance of a flashlight and referred to the 3L rule for choosing one. L1: Use lithium batteries for a longer shelf life. L2: Use LED bulbs for a flashlight to last longer and resist impact. L3: Understand that lumens are important. For a defensive light, at least 100 lumens is required. Boon also recommended being prepared for emergency medical situations. After all is said and done you can call the EMTs. However, if you have suffered a serious injury, it is crucial to act quickly. Make sure you have an emergency medial kit and educate your family and household members on how to use it. It’s a good idea to have a primary, secondary, and third plan. Different situations call for different responses. The plan will change if you or another family member isn’t home. The plan should be modified if there is a threat outside. It’s important not to complicate the situation, but you should have a standard operating procedure for all situations. Do you plan to evacuate or shelter in place? Where are you going to shelter if you are? Where can you evacuate if you are sheltering? You should assign different responsibilities to people responsible for gathering the children and calling 911. It is another thing to be prepared to face a threat that might break these barriers. You won’t panic if your door lock or surveillance camera detects a threat, but it’s a good idea to be prepared for any eventuality. You will need to modify the plan if you are faced with an emergency situation that you didn’t anticipate. The key is to have a plan you can modify, rather than making up your own. Richard Mann’s PlanA fenced yard with an electrical gate that houses two dogs. They aren’t a eat-you up dog, but they do enjoy barking outside during fair weather months. Their favorite pastime is barking at things that don’t happen around our house. We have surveillance cameras that allow us to see the entire house at night and exterior lighting that can be used to illuminate dark spots. Guns are kept in our bedroom and at every end of the house. In the event that there is an attempted break-in, it’s my responsibility to collect the children and my wife to call 911. Once we have gathered in the kitchen, it is possible to view all entry points and shelters as needed. You can go through the plan like you would a fire drill. If there are any concerns or changes, it is worth taking the time to discuss them. There is no better place than home for security and comfort.
