Tunnel Vision — Amazing Accuracy at Sierra’s Test Tunnel

November 14th 2022
NOTE: Although there are ten (10) shots within the group, we only display five (5) shot circles for simplicity. The measurement will not be affected by adding more circles, as the two closest shots, which determine the group size, are included. Would you believe that a.338 MOA at 200 yards would be 0.162 MOA? These are the test targets from Sierra Bullets. Sierra Bullets, like most bullet manufacturers, performs live-fire bullet testing in order to ensure that Sierra projectiles perform according to their promises. Sierra tests bullets at its underground test facility. Sierra’s 300-meter underground test range is the longest privately owned underground bullet testing facility in the Western Hemisphere. *A large collection of barreled action are used to test different bullet types every day. These barreled actions are clamped using stout, return to-battery test fixtures. These large, heavy test fixtures ensure near-perfect repeatability (with zero human-induced holding or errors in aiming).

These 10-shot test groups were taken at the Sierra Test Range at 200 Yards. The actual measurements of each sample are in inches. To convert to MOA, divide the numbers in half (or more precisely, divide by 2.094 which is 1 MOA at 200 meters). The 0.340 example is an example. The 0.340? middle group is 0.162 MOA at 200 meters. Scan-Verified 0.162 MoA Accuracy at 200 Meters

We used our On-Target Group Measuring software to measure the middle (.338 caliber), 10-shot group. This was to verify that Sierra’s measurements were accurate. We recorded a reading of 0.339 for the group size. — Within one-thousandths of the Sierra measurement. The MOA (Minute of Angle), is 0.162. This is a remarkable result for ten rounds with big.338 caliber bullets. A five-shot, 0.162 MOA group of 200 would be a great benchrest match. This target is capable of taking TEN shots. The current IBS world record for 10 shots at 200 yards with one target is 0.245?. It was set by Ed Watson in 1999.

Sierra Bullets has dozens of barreled action barrels for testing bullets at its 200-yard enclosed range. Each barrel has its own logbook that tracks the barrel’s usage.

RUAG owns a 500 meter underground tunnel that is fully-instrumented in Thun, Switzerland. A 5-lane, 300-meter underground shooting range is available near Ulm, Germany.
