Use Color Your Bullet Tips to Define Shot groups at Long Range

September 17, 2021. Color Your Bullet Tips to Define Shot groups at Long Range. It can be difficult to identify which bullet holes belong in a particular sequence of shots when shooting groups at long distances on paper. For example, if you shot three 5-shot groups of bullets at 600+ yards on paper, you would have 15 bullet holes (assuming there were no misses). It would be difficult to see the holes at target from that distance, even with a spotting scope. It would be difficult to identify which shots belong to which group if you were to inspect the target up close. A target camera can capture the shot sequence so you can have an idea of what shots belong to which group. This is how to group multiple shots into groups that can be used to better assess your shooting skills and load. It’s easy to mark your bullets using a Sharpie, felt marker pen, or a similar color. If you have three 5-shot groups, mark five bullets with red, five with green and five with blue (or violet). The target can then be identified by the colors on the paper. Round Robin: You can shoot Round-Robin using colors to assess seating depths, neck tension or other variables. The shot order (and barrel heating), do not affect group sizes in an equal way. You might have three different neck tensions marked with different colors on the bullets. Next, shoot Red, Blue and Green in the same sequence for five shots per color. Smart Tip: Make Colors Visible More Vividly Bring some alcohol solution and some Q-tips to your range kit. Use wet Q-Tips to lightly dab the shot onto the target paper. Here’s the front of the target before and after alcohol application: Forum member NewbieShooter explains that “Dabbing a little alcohol on the bullet holes using Q-Tips makes it pop a bit… especially the back side.” You can see below how the colors are spread onto the paper. This will clearly mark the shot holes with distinct colors. To see the colors on a lighter background, if you were shooting a bullseye with a dark color, look at the BACK side.
