Use commercial sign-holders as portable target stands

Need a portable and lightweight target stand? Here’s an alternative to the big, bulky PVC pipe or wood-framed target stands. These big frames are great, but they can take up a lot of space in your car and they tend to move around or even fall over in high wind. You can mount cardboard targets using a commercial signframe (the type used for real estate signage). A metal sign frame can be purchased for under $20 and staked into the ground. These sign frames are commonly used for real-estate signs. They are sturdy and secure even in high winds. They are also ideal for a simple target to zero your rifle during a varmint hunting. Zip ties or threaded screws can be used to secure a cardboard backer in most of these frames. Some frames allow you to slide the cardboard target backer into slots without any fasteners. The most common “Empire style” sign frame is rectangular at the top and has two pointed ends at the bottom, about 10” apart. To drive the frame into ground, place your foot on the crossbar. An angle-iron, Empire-style frame (no fasteners required) is offered by the fastrealestatesigns.com for $19.99. Reinforced-Plastic Sign framesThe plastic sign frame shown at right does not require any fasteners. Cut your cardboard target backing to 24″ (w) x18″ (h) and slide in from the top. Stick the frame in the ground by using the foot-slot at the bottom. These fiberglass-reinforced plastic sign frames are light yet surprisingly strong. These frames are also very affordable. SignsDirect.com sells a similar sign-holder with a full width base (wider legs). It costs $31.79. You can probably find something similar locally. Amazon also carries signs like these, made by Plasticade. Below are some dimensions of commercial plastic signs. Sign frames are not suitable for all terrains

These stake-in-the ground frames may not be as effective if you shoot on a very hard or rocky surface. These frames must be firmly seated in the soil. These frames are useful if you shoot on soft soil or grassy ground. They are simple, lightweight, and easy to set up. They make a great “field expedient” holder.
