Close Do you remember that fearful feeling you had as a child when you had to walk down a dark hallway? Imagine that you are an adult and your entire house is darkened. Safety should be your top priority. Do you want to be safer than your family? What is the most likely way these people will traverse the house? You’re so overwhelmed by adrenaline that you forget the layout. Yes, it sounds overwhelming. There are people who can help you prepare for situations like this: one man CQB Training. RELATED STORY I was alone when I experienced an incident in my home. I was just taking a shower when I heard something break and fall. My dog started to growl and only when she sees someone, she does so. Although I was a little scared, I knew I had to clear my home to get to my dog downstairs. It wasn’t going be easy, but I knew it was going to be difficult once I reached a corner. There are far too many blind corners for one person to cover. I cleared the house and discovered that multiple plants had been damaged by the wind. I realized I needed help. I didn’t know anything about room clearing and I didn’t know where to begin. My friend Imri Morgenstern, owner and lead instructor for Tactical Rifleman, was the one I turned to. He came to Phoenix to teach me the mental and physical breakdowns that CQB (Close Quarters Battle )…) can cause, and even more importantly, how to clean my own house. Piece of Pie I should say that this is a brief introduction. It is not something you can master in a matter of days. This is a complex skill set that requires a high level proficiency. We were limited on time and had to squeeze a five-day course into just two days at Cowtown, my home range in Peoria, Arizona. The first day was spent at the static range, honing our pistol and rifle skills so that safety and shooting were not concerns when we entered the shoothouse the following day. My competition Glock 19 was used with an Overwatch Precision TAC trigger. A Cobalt Kinetics BAMF pro Pistol with a 11.5-inch barrel had a Primary Arms SLC 1x microprism with ACSS reticle and a Sly Tactical TR1 Sling were also used. Imri taught me drills that helped me shoot more accurately, comfortably, and in compressed positions. It will feel strange for a while to shoot your pistol within 6-12 inches from your ribcage, compared to your normal presentation. But there is a reason. I even got a tiny frag under my left eyebrow while practicing those drills. It was quite a scare! After a while, Imri showed me his hybrid way of pie-ing doors. Reality Bites: We often see SWAT teams “dynamic entry” in movies and on television. Although dynamic entry is flashy and fast, it can be deadly in a single situation. You are trying quietly to clear your home in a tactical way without alerting others and not putting yourself in unnecessary danger. Imri’s method of pie-ing a house is to give away less of your body while efficiently and quickly clearing the dead space behind an “eventhorizon.” An eventhorizon is a boundary that prevents events from affecting the observer. In this case, the eventhorizon is the edge of the doorway. The dead space is what is unknown, and must be cleared. You can understand your position relative to the event horizon and determine how much of yourself you are presenting to the enemy.
