It is not uncommon for an opponent to charge, regardless of whether it is a streetfight or boxing match. To clarify, I’m not referring to shooting for the legs like in MMA. I will get to that later. I am referring to an opponent who is charging, throwing a flurry punches and learning how it can be dealt with.

Learn how to deal with a charging opponent
As with any defensive measure, you must keep your guard up. This is especially important if your opponent isn’t a skilled or experienced fighter, as they will flail. It is difficult to deal with flailing hands because you don’t know where they are going. But, a skilled or experienced fighter will be able to explain the structure and what to expect.
Next, focus on your footwork. It is not a good idea to confront a charging opponent face-to-face, as it can become force on force. He is also actively threatening to sabotage you. It is easy to deal with someone who is charging at you.
Many people find it natural to react negatively when someone moves towards them. But you can’t move backwards as fast as your opponent can move ahead. It’s a matter simple mechanics. You don’t know what’s behind you, so you might get trapped or trip over, which can make matters worse.
Always move to the side when someone is charging at your face. Then pivot to face them. You can also do a quick back step before you sidestep. This will create more distance as you move to one side. It is not a backward momentum, but a lateral one, as we have already mentioned.
If you move to the side, it can disrupt your opponent’s energy, particularly if he is committed. You force your opponent to stop, reorient and start again by moving to the side. You temporarily join his side, disrupting his attack. This gives you the opportunity to take offensive actions.
Do not be discouraged if he keeps charging. You just need to keep sidestepping until the opportunity presents itself to strike and grab the momentum.
Keep it real and you’ll be safe.
