But they also have a fondness to hide in clandestine vaults and secret storage places for their gear and gadgets in their humble homes. I have always wanted to be like these heroes and build and outfit a secret space. I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity. Here’s my take on the DIY Safe Room. RELATED STORY: Take Early Action to Prevent Home Invasion. My best friend from childhood (name withheld for secrecy), asked me if I would help him build a secret gun storage area in his new home. I agreed to sign on immediately. He also granted permission to share the process with the community as long as I did not reveal his name or the coordinates of his secret man-cave. What I didn’t know was the extent of the space required to achieve his dream. He simply smiled as he toured the house during construction and pointed below the stairwell. His ambitious plan was both genius and lunacy. I was struck by its genius. This unused storage space is ignored by most homeowners on two stories across the country. We were challenged to find a way to build this structure in 48 square feet of crawl space. We were about to find the answer. My project goals were simple. They were to be a safe place for my friend’s growing collection and display his firearms and ammo. Concealment is more important than the room becoming a ballistically-hardened “panic or safe room” within his budget. The plan was to keep out of sight and out of mind. He was a self-described prepper and wanted to have enough room for long-term survival food, medical supplies, body armor, and protective gear in case of an emergency. These goals would only be achieved if modular, compact, and low-profile solutions were available in all aspects. Planning and Execution. This project would not be exposed to the public. There were a few professionals in the family who were willing and able to supplement our amateur labor. A word of advice: Always rely on a professional when it comes to electrical and wiring. There is nothing more embarrassing than a “safe” room igniting your entire house. We dug in with the trusty SawzAll and carefully carved the drywall.
