Ohio Man Shoots Daughter’s Ex Boyfriend, as He Breaks Through the Front Door
A family’s Ring doorbell video captured 22-year-old James Rayl entering their Sydney, Ohio residence on July 31. Rayl’s 18-month-old ex-girlfriend was found inside the home. Rayl had left a voicemail for the young woman the night before the incident. The next day, he followed the family to their home.
Rayl reached the door and rang the bell to find out that the daughter did not want to speak to him. Rayl can be seen taking a deep breathe to get some courage before attempting the doorknob. The background can be heard as the daughter yells, “James!
Rayl attempts to open the door by hitting it with his shoulder when he can’t use the doorknob. You can hear Rayl repeatedly hitting the door with his shoulder and the father calmly repeating, “James no,” as he continues to hit the door. Rayl starts to slam into doors harder and the father informs the intruder that he has a gun.
The door finally opened shortly afterward. The father opened fire immediately and James Rayl, 22, was shot three more times. Rayl collapsed in front the garage after he fled the gunfire with his knees buckled.
A neighbor hears the ruckus and crosses the lawn to check what is going on. Rayl is found motionless by his neighbor. The family informs him. He realizes Rayl is not a threat as he approaches Rayl and informs his family to call 911. The family had already dialed the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Soon after, the police arrived on the scene and secured it.
The Aftermath
The father will not be charged with the incident and has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
KFOR reports that her father shot the man three times. A grand jury in Ohio decided not to proceed with the charges. They were based on the Stand Your Ground Law, and the Castle Doctrine. These laws allow homeowners in certain states to use deadly force in an intruder situation.
It is never a good idea to use deadly force. However, sometimes it is necessary. Even though we don’t know Rayl’s motive, it is possible that he would have killed his daughter if the father hadn’t shot and killed Rayl. The ex-boyfriend’s expression in the video is often a sign of ill intent.
So, I say, “Good for him.” He is just one example of the many ways guns can save lives.
