Vudoo Sixty 60 Review: Precision over Plinking

Vudoo Gun Works, St. George, Utah, and the brushfire-like spread NRL22 ignited a revolution in the firearms industry and the shooting public four years ago. Although the.17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire may have been the closest, Vudoo Gun Works of St. George, Utah, combined with the brushfire-like spread of NRL22, created a revolution in the firearms industry. The Vudoo V-22 Repeater was the first Remington 700-sized.22 LR since the 40x. A few things made the first generation Vudoos so successful. Mike Bush, cofounder and lead engineer, took a hard line and designed a centerfire-sized rimfire mechanism with a midlock bolt and an AICS magazine (with.308 dimensions). This resulted in a virtually “touchless” chambering. Bush’s design captured what was at the rear of the shell. It loaded a round without nose deformation by “picking up” a round at the top of the magazine stack, with the bullet nose elevated enough, so it doesn’t scrape on a feed lip or ramp, while the back end of the case is exposed enough for the bolt to grab it.The People’s Stock: The Grayboe Ridgeback, shown here in tan with black webbing, is a hugely popular–and effective–PRS/long-range option. This is a four-dimensional geometry problem. To ensure that the bullet doesn’t get scratched or dinged, the dimensions at the top, bolt face, and breech must be exactly 0.001 inches. Vudoo is not the only one who has to get this timing and geometry right. Each bolt-action rifle must perform this task, but some rifles are more precise than others. Vudoo has been extremely precise and has had great success. NRL and PRS centerfire shooters who were looking for a low-cost, easy way to train quickly adopted the rifle. Remember the days when quality.22 LR ammunition could be found at a low price? NRL22 became an Open Class rifle platform for the best shooters as it developed. Five of the top seven shooters in the 2020 National Match NRL22 gear survey shot a Vudoo. The 60-degree bolt throw allows for large optics to be mounted. This is essential to maximize the gun’s long-range capabilities. Vudoo’s round no. 2… and 3The second generation or Gen 2 Vudoo actions are the same basic pattern, but with a magnum length for.17HMR/.22WMR. 2… and 3The second-generation or Gen 2 Vudoo action is the same basic pattern but with a magnum length for.17HMR and.22WMR. If customers are able to wait five to six months, they can also get one and try it out. Let’s look at the context. The Gen 1 was created to reproduce a centerfire rifle with two-lug 90-degree throw. Other manufacturers have joined the full-sized rimfire train since then. Bergara’s B-14R barreled gun–a very reliable.22LR on a 700-footprint–can be purchased for a third of the cost of a Vudoo barreled gun. The Zermatt 90-degree throw RimX action is amazing. The tuneability of their AICS-patterned Rimfire magazine is a huge improvement over a Vudoo barreled action. The RimX bolt break down is easy thanks to its tool-less design. The RimX’s “slickness”, in true custom action form, is also among the best. The RimX action is about the same price as Vudoo’s barreled one. There are no complete rifles available so you will have to build them. Vudoo is now a sprinter with the Three 60. Bush redesigned his fire control system to allow for a quicker lock time. Gen 3 incorporates an Italian-made Flavio-Fare trigger. The 60-degree sear face has been a standard feature on Remington-style triggers. This applies upward pressure to the bolt until it drops. Dry-fire a barreled motion, and you will feel the bolt drop with your naked hands. Try it now if you have a CZ457. You can feel the trigger group moving down as the bolt closes by opening and closing the bolt. The striker doesn’t move forward or down because it has a 90-degree design. It just moves forward for more consistent primer strikes and more consistent ignition. The 60-degree bolt throw is also very light due to the lack of upward pressure from the Flavio triggers. 60-degree throws are typically more difficult than 90-degree throws because you have to cock the bolt in a shorter distance. Bush claims that his prototype Gen 3 with the Flavio, a 13-pound firing Spring and the Flavio is the lightest 60 degree action ever made. The 60-degree sear face of the first Vudoo Flavio repeater triggers still exists, but the 90s are on the horizon. The 90s are now available in single-shot benchrest action, with pull weights ranging from 0.7 to 2.25 ounces. Mike Bush is a man I trust. When my Three 60 with a Flavio barreled and 1:9 Ace barreled arrived, I realized that he was right. It’s the lightest and most efficient 60-degree bolt I have ever run. It requires less force than an Anschutz Match 54, and 12 o’clock ignition with the improved crescent pin. The single-shot firing pin is at 6 o’clock. Bush believes that the crescent shape is more consistent in ignition than a rectangular or circular dent in a spent-rim. Bush’s Ravage 22 is the chamber used in all Vudoo rifles. It was designed for Lapua ammunition. The majority of Vudoo rifles have an Ace barrel, but they also stock Bartlein and Krieger. They are still making 1:9 and other fast twist variations. This is a complex and fascinating development for long distance shooters, whether they are shooting new hand-loaded copper solid bullets like those from Cutting edge or match-grade 40 grain lead solids like the SKUs of Lapua. They are making faster twists available for all bullets at all distances. However, results are still early. I used the Three 60 barreled-action provided and dropped it into my tried-and true JP APAC chassis. The new American flag paint job was done by FSG Customs in South Waverly. The rifle was finished with a Nightforce ATCR 5-25x56mm barrel for extreme long-range work. A B&T Industries Super Cal Atlas Bipod provides an ELR.22 and oodles stability for long shots. Mike Bush and I were both on the trigger when the rifle made its first outing at 500 yards. The 1:9 Ace is one of my most accurate rifles at 50 yard, but miraculously seems to be my most accurate at 100 yard and beyond. Many discipline-specific twists are possible for.22 LR barrels. This means that a benchrest shooter competing at 50m might need something different from an NRL22X competitor ringing steel at 300 meters. It’s not cheap. Vudoo land requires you to have $3,000 available for a complete rifle. You can’t do that in boats, trucks, motorcycles, or centerfire. Rimfire is a different. Vudoo is the bleeding edge right now. Again. Target grids and bullseye sizes can be downloaded in MOA. This is a great option for long-range shooting. Enter your email address below.
