Shooting Sports USA explains that “Rimfire cartridges are the oldest self contained cartridges in existence. They have been in continuous production since mid-1850s.” Rimfire cartridge cases are formed from a thin brass sheet and have a hollow rim. The case is then filled with powder, and a bullet seated into the mouth. The case is then crimped to ensure that the bullet will have enough push and pull during firing.
