May 17th 2023Windflags – Definitely Worth Using, Even If You Don’t Compete There is a simple and inexpensive “miracle” device that can cut your group in half. You’re sacrificing accuracy if you don’t use this device. We are referring to a simple windflag, also known as a “miracle tool”. Windflags can improve accuracy on target more than spending your life savings or weighing charges down to the kernel. You should always bring windflags or some other wind indicator when you go to the range or prairie dog fields, whether you are a competitive shooter or a varminter. If you pay attention to the windflags you have, you can easily reduce your group sizes by half. Here’s the proof…Which Windflag should I buy? MTM makes an inexpensive, simple flag that is sold on Amazon for $17.99. Click HERE to find Benchrest Central vendors of windflags. Miss a 5 mph shift and you could DOUBLE your group size. The table below shows the effect of a crosswind of 5 mph at 100,200, and 300 yards. You may think, “Well, I wouldn’t miss a 5mph let-off.” If a 2.5 mph breeze changes from 3 o’clock (R to R) to 9 o’clock (L toR), you have missed a net 5 mph change. What will this do to your group’s performance? Check out the table.Point Blank Ballistics software values for 500? Values from Point Blank Ballistics software for 500? Imagine you have a 6mm gun that shoots half MOA consistently under no-wind conditions. What happens if you fail to notice a shift of 5 mph (the equivalent of a crosswind of 2.5 mph)? If you’re using a 68gr bullet with a flat base, your shot will move around 0.49? At 100 yards, your group size will be nearly doubled. With a 105gr. VLD, does the bullet move 0.28? Not as much, but enough to ruin an otherwise nice small group. What about an AR15 that shoots 55-grainers and 3300 fps. If you miss the same 5 mph shift your low-BC Bullet will move 0.68? This pushes the half-inch group past an inch. If you have a half MOA capable AR, it is now shooting worse than one MOA. As you might expect, wind effects are even more dramatic at 200 and 300 yard ranges. If you miss a full-value 5 mph wind change at 300 yards, your group could easily increase by 2.5? If you have a high-quality barrel and an accurate rifle, you are throwing away accuracy if you don’t use wind flags. High Power Wind Lab is a new Wind-Reading app that will help you determine your hold-offs under all wind conditions. This app is available for iOS devices and an Android version will be released soon.
