Muzzle blast can be a serious problem for prone shooters, especially on dirt, sandy, or dusty ground. Muzzle blast can cause serious problems, not only for the trigger-puller, but also for anyone on the other side of the gun. Some muzzle brakes send a powerful shockwave back to the shooter. Others send blast towards ground, kicking dirt, debris, and dust into the face of the prone shooter. It would be helpful for shooters to have a visual of shockwave and debris so they can make a decision on which brake design to choose.
Cal Zant at PrecisionRifleBlog.com applied a unique blend of creativity and resourcefulness to try to answer that question for 20+ muzzle brakes. He captured the blast patterns of 20+ brake designs using high-speed photography and household items for easy comparison. Cal was able to clearly show muzzle brake blasts. His clever “hi-viz” solution is revealed in the article. Visit the Precision Rifle Blog Muzzle brake ground signature test page to see the eye-opening results.
