The Zastava M70 pistol is a bit hefty for a pocket gun, but at their current prices, this little .32 is still a solid option.Zastava M70 Pistol Specs:Single-Action.32 ACP8-Round MagazineSimilar Size To Walther PPK/sThe nature of pocket pistols relegates them to the role of backup guns, something to have on you more for peace of mind and emergency situations than full-time CCW duty. Many people are reluctant to spend money on something that they don’t intend to use or carry only occasionally. While these guns are more collectible and expensive, most people who want to add a pocket gun to their collection would prefer to spend as little money as possible. The Zastava M70 pistol is a great option for those people. Photo:Rock Island Auction Company.History of the Zastava M70 pistol. Production of the M70 pistol started in 1970 at the Zastava Arms plant, which was then Yugoslavia. It was used by Yugoslavian police officers and military officers. It was lighter and more comfortable than standard M57-sized service pistols. It was in service with these groups for around twenty years before it was replaced by the CZ 99 clone of Zastava’s Sig P226. Design and FeaturesThe Zastava M70 pistol was essentially a smaller version of the M57 Tokarev clone. It is chambered for the.32 ACP cartridge and can use a straight blowback action instead of the traditional Browning tilting barrel system used by the Tokarev. It has a 3.7-inch barrel, and a shorter grip that is just large enough to fit an average man’s hand. It is single-action, just like the Tokarev. Photo: Wikipedia. The Zastava M70, unlike many imported Commbloc pistols has a manual safety. This means that one does not need to be added haphazardly for legal importation into America like it is with standard Tokarev designs. Although the safety’s two positions are quite far apart, they are perfectly oriented so that flicking it forward will make it fire. The Zastava M70 can feed from 8-round magazines, but can also be carried cocked with a ninth in it. It weighs a little less than the Walther PPK/s and has a slightly longer barrel. Although the extra weight and bulk are not ideal characteristics for a pocket pistol they are still very useful. Caribou Media Group might earn a commission on qualifying purchases. These pistols come with a basic rear notch sight from the factory. However, many imports are equipped with a ridiculous, unusable “sporter” sight. These sights are made of black plastic and should be replaced immediately. It’s difficult to find original surplus M70 pistol sight for sale. However, there are other options. Online guides can be found that show how to modify a standard M57 rear view to fit an M70. Optik Arms also has aftermarket 3-dot fiberoptic sights. The latter is about 25% more expensive than the pistol itself so it’s a good idea to buy an M70 with its original irons. Photo by Rock Island Auction Company. Zastava M70 pistols are still available for as low as $200. This makes them an excellent option for budget-minded buyers. They are quite nice guns for the price. M70s are a bit larger than other pocket pistols this size, but they can still be carried in a jacket pocket. If you are looking for a cheap backup gun that provides the same utility as a Walther PPK for a fraction of the price, the Zastava M70 pistol may be the right choice.
